Thurlestone takes its name from the distinctive rock arch just off the coast. There are beaches galore here – South Milton Sands, Leasfoot, Yarmer, Broadsands and the surfing spot at Bantham is just an easy walk along the coast. In between, you will find the wonderful golf course and tennis club if you fancy hitting a few balls!
Things to do
Beaches – plenty to choose from here. A choice of 5 beautiful beaches lie next to and close to Thurlestone. Bantham beach is one of the best for surfing and is backed by sand dunes with parking in a large car park. The beach is shallow and sandy so it’s great for families with kids who want to do a little swimming or paddling. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer. It’s fantastic for surfing and paddle boarding. Leasfoot beach is right next to Thurlestone Golf Clubhouse and is in a smaller sheltered sandy bay, backed by sand dunes. It’s a quiet and peaceful beach. Great for water sports, snorkeling, sub aqua and beach games, sunbathing and rock pooling. Thurlestone Sands is a large beach with fine shingle and sand with the backdrop of the ancient, iconic arched rock. It has a great laid back cafe, right on the beach. Yarmer beach is a decent sized beach with soft sands edged by rock pools and backed by sandy dunes and Broad Sands beach is the least accessible with no amenities or parking. It’s only accessible by the coastal path.
There are 2 golf clubs in close proximity Thurlestone Golf Club and Bigbury Golf Club. Both offering spectacular views whilst you play your round.
The coastal path offers numerous, stunning walks – all you have to do is choose your distance and which pub you should stop off at!
The towns of Salcombe and Kingsbridge are a short drive away offering lots of amenities.
Eat and Drink
Plenty to choose from here – The Village Inn – a fantastic place to dine with good food at a reasonable price. The Gastrobus at Bantham – if you’re at the beach all day. The Journey’s End at Ringmore serving great food are some to name but a few.
Throw in a fantastic range of great Pub Dining and fine dining in Salcombe and Kingsbridge and you really won’t have to worry about where to eat.
About
Thurlestone is named after the impressive Rock Arch lying just off the main beach. Its population was around 35 in 1086 and consisted of a few cottages. Slowly the village grew and it became an important spot for smugglers with the beaches being the drop off point for smugglers in the 1700s. Even though the village has grown, many of the cottages have retained their character. With beautiful beaches, a golf course, hotel and a dramatic coastline to explore along the coastal path, Thurlestone is a wonderful village to base yourself for a superb holiday.
