Salcombe is one of Devon’s top holiday destinations, with a choice of beaches, waterside eateries, trendy boutiques, a plethora of watersports and spectacular coastal scenery. The thatched villages of Hope Cove and Thurlestone are both closeby and offer great seascapes and family friendly beaches in picture postcard surroundings.
Things to do
You are spoilt for choice if you like water sports. Sailing, power boating, fishing, kayaking, paddle-boarding and coasteering are all on hand with equipment available to hire. If you like beaches, it’s similar – North Sands, South Sands or across by ferry to East Portlemouth for Millbay beach and Sunny Cove. Just along from South Sands is Overbeck’s Museum and Gardens run by the National Trust which is definitely worth a visit.
Eat and Drink
There are just too many fabulous places to eat and drink to mention in and around Salcombe, but we will mention a few of our favourites! In Hope, you have the Hope and Anchor pub and The Cove café bar, both just few paces from the beach often with live music.
Thurlestone has The Village Inn serving good home made food. There is beachside dining at South Milton’s Beachhouse or the Gastrobus at Bantham.
Salcombe is famed for its seafood and in Fore Street you will find a tempting selection of cafes, delis, restaurants, and pubs. You are spoilt for choice but a must is The Crabshed in Salcombe and The Winking Prawn at North Sands. For those with a sweet tooth, do not forget Salcombe Dairy ice cream!
All three villages are just a short drive from the pretty market town of Kingsbridge, which has two supermarkets along with a good range of independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants.

Thurlestone takes its name from the distinctive rock arch just off the coast. There are beaches galore here – South Milton Sands, Leasfoot, Yarmer, Broadsands and the surfing spot at Bantham is just an easy walk along the coast. In between, you will find a wonderful golf course and tennis club if you fancy hitting a few balls!
Hope Cove is a charming fishing village and has two lovely beaches with a laid-back feel. Every year in August is the Hope Cove Weekend, a lively yet relaxing weekend with events for all ages. Breathtaking views can be enjoyed from Bolberry Down and Bolt Tail, just a short coastal walk away.
