About This Property
Escape to No 1 Coastguards Cottage for a unique ‘Swallows & Amazons’ retreat
Escape to 1 Coastguard Cottages, a unique and secluded retreat steeped in history and charm. Built in 1835 as a lookout for smugglers, this former coastguard’s cottage combines rustic charm with breathtaking views, making it the perfect retreat for nature lovers, adventurers, and anyone seeking peace and seclusion.
Set on the stunning Yealm Estuary, the cottage is one of three historic coastguard homes and is perfect for families, friends, or couples seeking peace, adventure, and inspiration. Arrive by a scenic 30-minute walk through unspoiled National Trust woodland or cross the water by a seasonal electric ferry or a provided row boat docked at the nearby pontoon—the journey itself is part of the magic. Once here, you’ll discover an unpretentious, welcoming home with everything you need for a relaxing escape.
Spend your days kayaking or swimming in the calm estuary waters, and your evenings dining alfresco on the terrace, watching the tides roll in. With its rustic simplicity, cosy interiors, and unforgettable views, 1 Coastguard Cottages is the perfect setting for a digital detox, a family holiday, or even a writer’s retreat.
When you arrive, you’ll find a shared slipway in front of a traditional boathouse. From here, a flight of steps leads to the front of the cottage, where you’ll find outdoor seating and a barbecue area with stunning estuary views.
Step through the front door into a dining area, complete with a charming old cooking fireplace feature that nods to the cottage’s heritage. Off this space is a compact but well-equipped kitchen with a small hob, microwave, Aga, fridge, and dishwasher—perfect for rustling up simple meals.
The cosy lounge is furnished with a comfy large sofa, TV, DVDs, board games, and a feature fireplace, making it the ideal spot for family evenings or lazy afternoons. From here, you’ll also find a utility room and a bathroom with a shower, basin, and toilet.
Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, two of which enjoy beautiful estuary views. This floor also has a family bathroom complete with a bath with an overhead shower, basin, and toilet.
Please note that whilst No 1 Coastguards is a charming cottage, it is not for the feint hearted. Access is via a small rowing boat provided by the owners. It's a short row across the River Yealm from the Yealm Steps to the owner's pontoon or via the Electric taxi that drops you at Warren Point and then a short woodland walk takes you to the cottage.
Whilst incredibly charming, please note that No 1 Coastguards Cottage is rustic, rural without the 'polish' of some holiday rentals.
You will be immersed in nature with arguably the best river views in South Devon and won't want or need to leave until your holiday is over!
Please note that during the winter months we will accept longer bookings for up to 3 months. Ideal to retreat and reset! Please enquire for more details.
