Green hills, rivers, lagoons and mountain vistas

The valley of Ayora is in Spain's Valencia province, about 70 miles north of Alicante. The area is ideally situated for commuting to both Alicante and Valencia airports - just one hour by car - and the motorway to Madrid is only twenty minutes drive away.  And the lovely beaches of Spain's Costa Blanca are just a hour away.

The valley is fertile, irrigated by an age-old system fed from a source in the mountains. The valley is surrounded by luscious green hills, pine forests, rivers, lagoons and valleys - every walkers dream! The area is very rural, with only six villages and the bustling market town of Ayora - all very different and all with their own history and places of interest.

Pretty riverside walks

The valley is steeped in history, with evidence of occupation in the stone age and by the Romans and Moors. Today the area is known for its delicious cherries, peaches and apricots. It is also famous for the production of honey and olive oil which is exported all around the world.

The largest of the villages, it is set amongst scenery one could only imagine. The village has all amenities that you could need, such as a 24 hour medical centre, vets, supermarkets, boutiques, bakers, butchers, opticians, schools and banks etc. Every Monday morning the local market brings all the other villages together – this is a good opportunity to see the electric atmosphere in the village.

Set high in the centre of the village is the historical castle that was once its protector, and is now in the process of restoration to its original beauty. In the entrance to the village, set in a glass case and always surrounded by flowers placed there by the residents, is the effigy of the patron saint, which is regularly paraded around the village. On the other side of the village is a Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Rosario - a small church that attracts visitors from all around Spain to see the effigy of the Virgin.

Historical castles, beautiful scenery

Teresa de Cofrentes is the closest village - much smaller but still buzzing with atmosphere.

At the top of this little village is the old monastery, with its tales of the ghosts of the monks that once lived there.

20 minutes drive away is the small village Cofrentes, set upon a lagoon of jade waters. Regular boat trips are available through the lagoon, taking you to the village of Cortes de Pallas, high up in the mountains. Cortes de Pallas is only accessible by one road and a tunnel cut through the mountains.

Jalance is the second largest of the villages, with its numerous churches and historical monuments visible from the village's entrance. The area's natural caves are a big tourist attraction and Jalance also benefits from a local health spa, which has a cinema, church, beauty rooms and restaurants.
